There is a fairly lively discussion currently going on between the efficiency of window film versus low – E glass windows. Consumers are starting to consider the choice between the two and which will be most efficient as far as the needs for keeping energy costs under control.

Energy is becoming an expense consideration, whether it is a residence or a commercial building. The US Department of Energy estimates that inefficient windows result in as much as 35% of the buildings energy being wasted. The California Energy Commission moves that even further by noting that up to 40% of the air conditioning needed to cool down a building result from solar heat gain through the windows. Those costs can make any homeowner or building manager think of ways to be more energy efficient.

Those who favor low – E glass windows believe this way because it means replacing the entire window, which may be energy inefficient to begin with. A consumer would have to consider the U – factor, the windows overall insulating value; and the solar heat gain coefficient, which measures the ability of window to deflect solar heat. Because the low – E window products have argon gas between the panels, there is a greater thermal effectiveness as compared to older windows. This product also has the ability to block health threatening ultraviolet rays from the sun. The low – E windows are not inexpensive, however, and could cost as much as $1000 depending on the size of the window being purchased.

Window film has been proven time and again to be an inexpensive and effective means of energy savings. It has been proven effective in blocking of harmful ultraviolet rays and the ceramic variety is a successful deterrent to smash and grab robberies. Critics will however go back to difficulties with the window itself. Window film cannot address the problem of an inefficient frame because it only covers the glass. A low – E window installation means the frame will probably be replaced as well and can create better insulation. Additionally, window film blocks solar heat in the winter, when heat is needed.

Alternatively, those who are in favor window film will point to the cost differences between window film and low – E window replacement. A homeowner may find it very difficult to afford putting in low – E windows throughout the house. That isn’t quite the problem with window film because the cost per square foot is approximately 1/10 that of low – E glass panes. There are tax incentives available, but these may not make much of a dent in the cost of putting in the low – E Windows. Those in favor of window film will point out the cost and also that the payback period for initial investment is much shorter window film.

It boils down to cost. Those who can afford low – E windows will probably move ahead on this knowing that the glass ordinarily can last up to 30 years and window film does not ordinarily last that long. Those who are on tight budgets would probably consider the window film is a better alternative. Either way, it has to be remembered that both will keep energy costs under control and that is the primary reason for making improvements to structure’s windows anyway.

Historic Buildings Predicting the Future? http://www.mangaget.com/blog/2013/04/historic-buildings-predicting-the-future-2/ http://www.mangaget.com/blog/2013/04/historic-buildings-predicting-the-future-2/#comments Tue, 30 Apr 2013 07:31:33 +0000 http://www.mangaget.com/?p=2648 Some of America’s most historic buildings are being retrofitted to become the most energy efficient and sustainable buildings in the country. Some of America’s most historic buildings are being retrofitted to become the most energy efficient and sustainable buildings in the country. New York’s iconic Empire State Building recently insulated 6,514 windows by adding a layer of energy management film between re-conditioned window panes. A California based company, Serious Materials, was able to transform 90% of the building’s existing windows just through retrofitting.

Window films can be the ideal choice for retrofitting older commercial buildings by helping to balance energy savings and occupant comfort while still maintaining views.? High rise buildings, as well as older historic buildings, tend to have expansive layers or floors of glass windows that add to heat load. Window film can help keep buildings cool while providing about an average of 6%-20% return on investment.

Traditional buildings consume almost half the total fossil fuel energy in Europe and North America. Eco-friendly Zero Energy Buildings (ZEBs) generate energy on-site through solar and wind technology to limit fossil fuel consumption and limit carbon emissions. Some such buildings operate entirely off the grid. Surprisingly, the concepts that are embraced by contractors who strive to build or retrofit existing structures are very flexible.

Not every historic building restoration can achieve a complete transformation to reach ZEB status.? There are ways to retain historic charm while making the building more energy efficient and yet comfortable for occupants.? Window film is one cost-effective alternative for historic buildings. It protects interiors from harsh UV rays, blocks summer heat gain through historic windows and improves winter insulation by preventing heat loss through single pane windows.

Currently, there are retrofits of historic or older commercial buildings that are achieving dramatic results in breaking the Zero Energy Building barrier. These are several exemplary older building retrofits that are setting the bar for complete building energy transformation.

  • The IdeAS Z2 Design Facility -? A San Jose concrete cube building built in the 1960’s, the IdeAS Z2 Design Facility was transformed recently into a net zero facility through installation of a rooftop photovoltaic system, installing high quality insulation and by using innovative electrochromic glass that is? electronically tint-able using solid-state controls.

  • Salem Oregon’s Painters Hall – Painter’s Hall was retrofitted in 2010 to achieve zero energy status by becoming 100 per cent solar powered and uses excess electricity to pump water through a geo-thermal loop. Painter’s Hall is a 1930s-built industrial building that has been transformed into an ultra-efficient, net-zero energy community center for the environmentally sensitive Pringle Creek development in Salem.

  • Wayne Aspinall Federal Building – The nearly 100 year old Wayne Aspinall Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse is being retrofitted to become America’s first net-zero energy building of historic status. Steps such as adding window film and solar panels, geothermal heating and cooling, plus lights that adjust based on ambient conditions are all components of the retrofit. The Wayne Aspinall Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse is a three-story Second Renaissance Revival style building in Grand Junction, Colorado. Construction was initially begun in 1915.? Featuring arched first floor windows with sidelights, this historic three story building is a ground breaking example for combining historic preservation with principals of net zero energy consumption.

As the saying goes, “everything old is new again,” historic buildings in the United States may no longer need to meet the fate of the wrecking ball. Preserving our past with an eye to the future may become financially feasible for the majority of us who long to see our architectural beauties restored.

The march of time does more than simply slow a person down. As a person matures with age vision can become a problem. Cataracts forming over the lens of the eye can cause vision to become cloudy and require surgery for these obstacles to be removed. Ultraviolet light is a primary culprit in the formation of cataracts, and senior citizens are advised to have sunglasses with them when they go outdoors to obstruct these damaging rays. It’s all part of sensible healthcare prevention.

That’s good advice but there still remains a problem. Those ultraviolet rays that have the greatest potential of causing cataracts are known as UVA rays. The Environmental Protection Agency reports a UV Index every day to warn people of high levels of ultraviolet rays. Naturally, people wear sunglasses to minimize the exposure of their eyes to the sun but a challenge occurs when normal living behavior puts a person at risk indoors. Modern technologies are making it increasingly more convenient for people to spend even longer periods of time in their house. Ultraviolet lights rays can pass through unprotected glass and the glare can have a serious impact on a person’s eyes. This means that it’s very possible for a person to be exposed to UVA rays and the potential formation of cataracts even inside of the home. The consequence is that senior citizens are possibly exposed to damaging ultraviolet rays even though they feel they are perfectly safe.

Window film can be a very effective deterrent to ultraviolet rays. It is estimated that good window film will block as much as ??99 % of ultraviolet rays, which is the same degree of protection recommended for sunglasses, without significantly decreasing the light coming in. The protection that this gives to senior citizens cannot be understated. The window film acts like the protective shielding of sunglasses. With window film on the glass, senior citizens can spend more of their time in the comfort of their home without running major risks with their sight.

Protection is extremely important after a person has undergone cataract surgery, even to the point of always wearing sunglasses outdoors during the period of recovery. Window film allows this vision protection to continue when the recuperating patient is inside. It serves to reduce glare and also protects the surface of the eyes that are still adjusting to better vision. Perhaps the best way to imagine window film is if windows were large sunglasses. The same kind of protection afforded by those totally fashionable shades is given by the film. Yes, it’s sad to say window film is probably not going to make anybody look like a fashionista. Yet what it will do is allow a person to look out at the beautiful world without having that vision obstructed by cataracts.

Window film always has had a reputation for being an energy-efficient addition to the decor of any home. Its value as a means of blocking ultraviolet rays and protecting eyes has also been touted by optometrists and other doctors. Window film has artistic value to it. Its colors and shapes can add eye catching detail to ordinary window glass. Window film in the form of geometric figures can create arresting pieces of visual artistic display.

Geometry is no stranger to the art world. It was used in ancient Greece and geometric abstraction is a widely accepted form of 20th-century modern art. Window film can be bought in any number of patterns and geometric shapes is one of them. A homeowner can take these precut shapes and attach them directly to the windows of the residence. The result is a very modern almost Cubist presentation that immediately adds to the ambience of the room. It’s possible to have stained glass window film, which does include geometric shapes in the contours and substance. However this might be a little bit too much miniature geometry for the tastes of some people, and the larger geometric figures have a more modern, technical art appeal to them.

The utilitarian elements of window film itself should not be ignored. Art is fantastic, but if it is also useful that increases the overall value to a homeowner. It’s wonderful to have various rectangles and triangles on the window pane, but it is best for the residence if that same art film has the ability to block out ultraviolet rays and conserve energy. Those elements of window film should be a part of any shopping tour to find the right designs. It’s also good to remember that geometric art can be a lot of fun. Shapes are already created so an amateur artist/DIY enthusiast can let his or her imagination roam free as the window becomes a transparent canvas on which to create. While some ideas can be drawn from the modern art wing of a museum, Islamic art also has some ideas that person can use to turn the study window into an artistic masterpiece.

Avalon is a pattern of window film that has geometric figures and space. It also has the fundamental qualities of good window film. Something a person may want to consider doing is little experimenting with the window film. For the sake of art, a person could put window film on those areas of the window where there’s a desire to block sunlight, such as where it looks onto a couch or desk, and not put film in other areas. The result can be a contrast of shade and light that could look extremely attractive. It’s up to the homeowner to decide how best to use the medium. Window film can be a visual delight as well as being very efficient. Geometric art is something that window film can easily accommodate and the combination can create a wonderful display of art and light in any domestic space.

How do we expose a generation brought up on video games and sophisticated special effects to a home of the future that is optimistic, eco-friendly and viable? We can look to the past to see how well our parents predicted homes of the future.

A syndicated news article released in 1954 extolled the ?virtues of the “house of the future,” featuring such oddities as nickel size gas burners, refrigerators that preserved food through gamma radiation instead of cold temperature, wireless electric lamps and central heat fueled by radiation! Some may remember the Disneyland Monsanto House of the Future that was a park attraction from 1957 to 1967. Who can forget the incredible structure built of all man-made materials? It opened with this enticing invitation:

“Step up to the Monsanto House of the Future, with its four equal wings “floating” above the beautifully landscaped grounds and waterfalls. Enter the dining and family room, a comfortable place where the family of the future will play, rest, and dine on stylish plastic furniture. Look into the “Atoms for Living Kitchen” with its revolutionary microwave oven….”

Obviously, the plastic dining room furniture was optional, but most homes today do sport a microwave oven and a flat screen television. The Monsanto House of the Future was a result of four years of joint study and design by Monsanto and the Massa-chu-setts Institute of Tech-nology.

Another earlier example of historic homes of the future were found at the “Homes of Tomorrow” at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1933 in keeping with the theme, “A Century of Progress.” These homes demonstrated modern residential conveniences and creative new building materials and techniques.? Five of the original display homes were moved to Beverly Shores and are maintained by the Indiana Park Services at Indiana Dunes. The “House of Tomorrow,” the “Florida Tropical House,” and three other homes are all on the National Register of Historic Places. The homes are not open to the public but are part of a driving tour. A guide is available at the Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor Center.

The popular television cartoon series, “The Jettsons,” was a whimsical look into the future. ?This prime time show ran from1962 to 1963 and featured such forward thinking inventions as a hovercraft and Rosie the Robot Maid. We do have Roomba’s and other robotic floor cleaners today, but the personal use hovercrafts are still in development.

The Chicago Museum of Science and Industry recently featured an exhibit of one of Chicago’s greenest homes displaying the latest in technology, including solar film on the roof and many high tech gadgets.? Museum visitors were able to visit the Smart Park to discover native plant gardens, vertical?rain and vegetable gardens as well as ?a 40-foot wind turbine. We may one day look back upon this exhibit and marvel at what was predicted and laugh at that which never materialized.

It seems that every generation wants to take a stab at what the future may hold for us. The future is now in so many aspects of our lives that successful prediction?seems?harder than ever. Instead of predicting it, the generation of today may be satisfied just to live it.

Cartoonist Gary Larson once drew a picture of a dinosaur standing in a classroom setting with other dinosaurs in attendance. The standing dinosaur had a pointer and he was motioning to a chart which stated, in essence, the problem: ?the ice age was coming, the forests were dying, food was scarce and their population had the brain the size of a walnut. I think of this cartoon quite often in regards to the demand for faster, sleeker technology and the intense competition to stay ahead of the curve. ?Good thing the human brain is slightly larger than the size of a walnut.

Television is one area of technology that seems to be in need of some updating, ?but how do you update what is already a remarkable invention?? One of my pet peeves is the constant streaming of secondary information that now takes up a lot of the screen.? Whether it is breaking news in some distant land or information about a baseball player’s current statistics, it gets tiring trying to discern the picture puzzle. Some people probably even lose interest in trying to watch. How can we get additional information we may desire without cluttering up the screen?

Looking to Akamai Technologies for a solution makes sense primarily because this company’s mission is to provide services to companies with internet content who wish to quickly and efficiently interface with users browsing the web. Akamai (which is a Hawaiian word implying smart and witty) went to Nielsen, the company that has analyzed television viewers’ behaviors practically since television programming was first broadcast, for current trends.? The statistics revealed that a large number of today’s television watchers are multi-taskers.? A full 40% reported that they also use smartphones or tablets while watching television.

Based on this revelation, Akamai went to work on detecting what programming a viewer is watching and stream “secondary content”? like that mentioned above to these devices in as close to real time as possible. Whether you want to know from whom Angelia Jolie purchased a gown she is wearing at an awards show or the latest stats on your favorite basketball team, it will all appear via this app, thus clearing the television screen for a clean picture.? Of course, this would also allow you to turn off this feature as well.

The methods for obtaining a viewer’s program selection(s) are still on the drawing board.? Akamai is looking at added software in the television itself or a box such as those provided by DirectTV now. Even if a viewer is channel surfing, this app is expected to be able to collect sufficient information about what is being seen to provide relevant information.

Though the technology has yet to be perfected, these types of developments are known in the industry as “second screen apps.” The remarkable projection about this technology is that it is expected to be a 5.9 billion dollar industry in just four years.? For some of us, it may be a little too “big brotherish” but for many people, it’s a perfect fit for the seemingly, unending quest for real time information.

Organically grown vegetables or exotics like orchids can be produced year round by gardeners willing to make a minimal investment in a backyard greenhouse.? Innovative do-it-yourselfers can use salvaged materials combined with cutting edge solar films to produce tomatoes, squash, herbs and greens, even during the winter months. It is remarkable how a small space can reap big benefits.

Some of the most aesthetically pleasing greenhouses can be built by acquiring discarded French doors and windows from salvage yards.? The addition of a roof using solar power producing film can provide light for the greenhouse and be a source of power to circulate warm water to keep temperatures consistent.

Other considerations prior to constructing the greenhouse is to assess how much time you will spend there, it’s placement in your yard and the materials you will use in construction.? If the greenhouse will be visible from living areas of your home, consider the shape and materials that will be both visually pleasing and be energy efficient as well.? If you plan to spend 2-4 hours a day in your greenhouse, you will also want it to be a comfortable work environment in winter or summer.

Products?such as?Solar-Ice can lower greenhouse temperatures in daytime heat. Solar-Ice uses controlled diffusion to make more light available to plants by increasing the amount of diffused light while reducing short wave infra-red radiation. ?This results in healthier plants and less scorching. It also makes the greenhouse a more comfortable place to work during full sun.

Plastic greenhouses are a viable alternative to glass walled greenhouses and can be constructed as temporary structures not requiring a permit.? Plant production is equal to that of glass greenhouses.? Walls can be constructed from readily available clear films such as UV protected polyethylene or co-polymers.

Prior to beginning construction of a backyard greenhouse, you need to consider the location you have chosen.? Make certain that no trees or structures are creating shade that will block sunlight.? All exterior and interior walls should be painted white.? Most plants require at least 8 hours of sunlight per day to thrive.

Temperature is as important as light in production of healthy plants.? When light levels are low, the greenhouse must be kept warm and barrels of solar heated water can help with this challenge.? Soil temperature should be ambient and creating deeper beds of soil helps maintain a constant soil temperature.

The creation of a watering system can be as simple as a daily routine of watering plants with a hose or?watering can, or as sophisticated as installing an automatic system which activates a water supply by judging the dryness of the soil. Some gardeners place pots on a bed of constantly moist sand or a mat of synthetic fiber which functions like sand in retaining moisture.

Plants thrive in many types of soil mixtures, or mixtures of organic matter without soil. The growing mixture must hold water and drain well, be porous, well aerated, and pest-free. ?Commercial mixtures are already sterile and my contain fertilizer, which provide nutrients for stronger plants.

No need to look further than the local second hand store for?many of the materials needed to construct your own greenhouse. With a bit more investment in time and money, you can even?bring technology to this favorite pastime, and?provide a better?quality of vegetables?for your kitchen table.

Window film is universally recognized as an amazing energy efficiency tool. It has also been recommended as a way of blocking dangerous ultraviolet light from beaming onto an unsuspecting person. Given those positive statements, it seems rather confusing that there are laws restricting the use of window film. With all of its benefits, why are there any limitations?

There apparently is no problem at all with the window film on the glass of residential homes or office buildings. The problem seems to arise with the window film or tint on the windows of cars, and there are number of reasons for this being the case. There is a possibility of criminal activity going on in a car that’s heavily tinted but safety is the more pressing issue. If the tint of the window film is too dark a driver has difficulty viewing traffic, thus increasing the potential for accidents.

This conversation is, of course, a two way street. The trucking industry has expressed concerns about glare from the sun reducing the ability of truck drivers to see the road ahead. The US Department Transportation is allowing the trucking industry to use window film in order to promote better safety for trucking, but there still are some issues. The majority of cars being made today come with window tinting on them. States vary in the requirements that have for window film and it will come as no surprise that southern states will allow higher levels of sun blocking. The new cars with tinted glass may or may not be in compliance with the laws of a given state and a car owner may unknowingly be in violation of statute. It also has to be considered that window film does block ultraviolet rays which can cause melanoma or aid in the development of cataracts. Somewhere a consistent position for window film has to be created that offers protection for both passengers and drivers, and at the same time doesn’t accidentally violate local law.

The International Window Film Association has recommended model legislation that can address the problem of inhibiting vision, and the same time allow for sensible levels of tinting to be permitted. The model includes what type of colors may not be permitted and that tinting film only be used on the top of the windshield. The importance of adopting a standard is to prevent the above-mentioned situations where a car or truck driver unknowingly violates the law in a given state. The Association is in full agreement with the need to enforce any law regarding window film, and is willing to loan light meters for training purposes to any law enforcement agency.

States have their own unique laws regarding window film. It’s a good idea for any auto owner to investigate those laws prior to putting any window film on the car or truck being driven. The irony is that while there is a concern that auto window film will shelter shady dealings, residential and office window film are considered deterrents to burglary. Hopefully, the model legislation will be considered seriously and efforts will be made at the local level to develop a uniform law that will fairly apply in all 50 states.

It is a tough business world and companies have to compete for the attention of the consuming public. This can result in an awful lot of money spent on media advertisements and promotions to draw the eye. A small business may not have an awful lot of capital to spend on television exposure but that doesn’t mean it can’t get notice. A way to broadcast corporate logos is to use window film.

This can be a very good marketing device. Billboards are noticed by commuting traffic but these can be expensive. That same commuting traffic can see the corporate logo rather prominently if it happens to be on the window film placed on the office windows. It doesn’t have to be darkened tints, and there are a range of window films that can advertise the business as well as allow for seek through capabilities. Taking a look again at commuting traffic: why not have a moving billboard, where they can show the company brand all over town? It’s really quite possible with window film. It doesn’t necessarily have to be just something to cover the glass with logo and design work. As a matter fact there is a growing trend towards using car wraps, making the vehicle look like one big present to the consumers. Those who have taken advantage of this innovative use of window film have reported extremely good sales as a consequence. What makes window film based advertising on a car such a great idea is the sheer novelty. A car decorated with really stylish or eye-catching colors is something that brightens up the day for a number of drivers. Furthermore, it permits the company to put the product in front of the eyes of a consumer numerous times, and that is the trademark of a good marketing campaign. Of course, there are few things that have to be membered when using this type of mobile advertising. If any window film is being used on cars, be sure that it is compliant with state laws regarding window film.

The ability to use window film for advertising is pretty much the frosting on a very nice cake. Window film offers an awful lot to a business. It is already recognized as a fantastic way of reducing energy costs as well as blocking health threatening ultraviolet rays from seeping into the workplace. It also is great in preventing the smash and grab burglaries that so often plague a small business. Entrepreneurs do not have an awful lot of money to spend but they have to find the means to advertise even on shoestring budget. That is the real beauty of window film as an advertising medium: it doesn’t cost that much. The potential for it to grab attention and promote consumer traffic into the business simply can’t be denied. This is also true for major companies as well.
